Top Ten Mixes to Make with Kids

via Rustic Escentuals

Here are my top ten favorite mixes to make with your kids. These mixes are simple, quick and fun. They are also great for hair as well as skin. This is a great opportunity to teach your children about the natural ingredients you use to take care of their hair and what they do. I’ve included age appropriateness but If you want to know more, check here and here.

WHIPS

= Butter + Oil + Hand Mixer [12 & up]

2 parts of your favorite butter and 1 part of your favorite oil(s) and a hand mixer will yield you a delightfully fluffy whip.

  1. Shea Butter Whip ( my favorite!)
  2. Mango Butter Whip (light + shine)
  3. Cocoa Butter Whip (slip + scent)

OIL TREATMENTS

= Oils + Measuring Cup [6 & up]

Oils are a great way to seal in moisture. When you mix different ones together you can get the best of both worlds. Cater it to what you want to happen. Do you want it to be light and moisturizing, use more coconut oil. Do you want something that helps with hold use more castor oil. Check out this list of oils and what they do here. Below are my favorite combinations.

  1. Coconut Oil + Jojoba Oil [moisture + seal]
  2. Grapeseed Oil + Castor Oil [hold + shine]
  3. Avocado Oil + Jojoba Oil [scalp + nourish]

SPRITZ

= H2O + AVJ + Humectant + Spray Bottle [4 & up]

This is as simple as mix, pour and shake. You can add your desired ingredients into your spray bottle and you are ready to go. Below are my favorite spritzers. Quick Tip: Using distilled water will help the spritz to stay fresher longer.

  1. 1 part Glycerine + 3-4 part H2O
  2. 1 part Aloe Vera Juice + 2 part H2O
  3. 1 part Glycerine + 1 part AVJ + 3-4 H2O

CONDITIONER

= Humectant + Oil + Clay + Mixing Bowl [4 & up]

Deep conditioning is a great for restoring moisture to hair and many naturals do this in their regular routine but for the kiddos you can pull this out when you think their hair seems dry. You can find my favorite recipe here but any combination of the following would be great! Quick Tip: I usually like to apply on freshly washed, damp hair and leave mixture on with a shower cap for 20-30 minutes.

  1. Rhassoul or Bentonite or Kaolin
  2. Honey or Glycerin
  3. Jojoba Oil or Coconut Oil
